Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Chrome Repair

Hydraulic cylinder rod and bore repair

Scored, pitted or worn cylinder rods don’t have to be replaced. We strip the old chrome, grind out the damage, plate new hard chrome and polish it back to size. Hydraulic repair shops send us rods so they can turn cylinders around faster than ordering new.

Hard chrome plated rods and shafts at H&M Plating

What we repair

  • Cylinder rods and piston rods with scoring, pitting or flaking chrome
  • Cylinder bores and ID surfaces (ID grinding and honing)
  • Rams and plungers for presses, balers and shears
  • Rods for heavy equipment, mobile hydraulics and industrial presses

How we do it

  1. Inspect, measure and check straightness.
  2. Strip the old chrome and grind out the damage.
  3. Weld overlay or sulfamate nickel first if the rod is too far undersize for chrome alone.
  4. Plate hard chrome, with a hydrogen-relief bake on high-strength steels.
  5. Grind and polish to a mirror finish, to your print.

Why hydraulic shops use us

Chrome, nickel, weld overlay and grinding happen in one facility, so a rod never bounces between vendors. Tell us the rod size and when you need it back, and we will work to your schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the chrome flake on my rod?

Usually poor surface prep, a skipped hydrogen-relief bake on high-strength steel, or chrome built too thick. We check all three on every repair.

Do you handle one-off rods or steady volume?

Both. Many of our customers are hydraulic repair shops that send rods every week.
